Working Principle of ECO Series Refrigerated Air Dryer

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger

In a shell-and-tube type air dryer, the heat exchanger consists of a large outer shell (cylindrical vessel) and a bundle of tubes inside. Compressed air flows either through the tubes (tube side) or around the tubes (shell side), while the refrigerant or precooled air flows through the other path.

This counter-flow or cross-flow heat exchange cools the compressed air, causing moisture to condense. The condensed moisture is then separated and drained.

Working Process

Warm compressed air enters the air-to-air heat exchanger, where it is precooled by outgoing cold refrigeration air. Precooling makes it possible to use a smaller, more economical refrigeration unit.

The precooled air then enters the Freon heat exchanger, where it is cooled to +3°C. At this temperature, moisture condenses into liquid droplets.

The condensed moisture is removed from the air stream by an efficient demister and automatically drained through an Automatic Drain Valve.

The cold, dry compressed air then passes back through the secondary side of the air-to-air heat exchanger, where it is reheated by the incoming warm air.

The dry air coming out of the air dryer is ready to use for instrumentation and process air applications.
